The maximum number of plastic surgeries performed in Indore is for patients who have survived a burn injury or accident. While cosmetic surgery is soon catching up with people, surgeons point out that in a population of 40 lakh, around 16 plastic surgeries are performed.

Speaking at a state-level conference of plastic surgeons in the city on Sunday, plastic surgeon Dr Prakash Chajjlani said, "People have this huge craze for getting fair complexion. We receive so many requests wherein people want a fairer skin. It is important for them to understand that everything has its pros and cons."

He pointed that in cosmetic surgeries, maximum surgeries are performed for nose, breast augmentation and liposuction. "The majority of patients are from the age group of 18-30. Though the demand is still less compared to that experienced in other cities and countries," adds Dr Chajjlani.

Dr Zaheer Khan from Bhopal said the main problem with this field are the misconceptions attached to it. "People often think that once they get a surgery they will not be able to lead a similar life as they did prior to it."

The key speaker at the event Dr Satish Vyas, a plastic surgeon practicing in America, also felt the same. "Most of the times people are influenced by advertisements. It is imperative for them to understand that it is always not possible for the scar to go from the body or a drastic change to occur post surgery."
