A crackdown by the food and drugs department in Indore has almost stopped serving of alcohol in the city’s restaurants, bars and pubs after midnight, an official said on Monday.
“We have been carrying out continuous raids since a year against sale of alcohol and serving of hookah after the midnight deadline. This has definitely reduced irregularities,” food inspector Manish Swamy said.
The food and drugs department has been carrying out raids along with the excise department and Indore Municipal Corporation.
“We carried out raids on Sunday to check late night serving of alcohol in bars like Woodstock Lounge, Amaltas Hotel and serving of hookah in Fellas cafe, Cafe terezza. But we did not find any irregularities,” Swami said, adding that these eateries have also improved their hygiene and sanitation.
Earlier this year, a hotel association said all of its members would abide by rules.
Under the state’s excise policy, bars and pubs are not allowed to serve liquor past midnight.
Bar and pub owners said due to regular monitoring, their business witnessed up to 25% decline. “Indore is a business hub wherein people step out late to party. With a deadline 12 midnight, we see a clear decline. Many people have chosen to have a house party,” a pub owner said on conditions of anonymity.
