After receiving lukewarm response to the first two rounds of admission in 1,390 private schools under the Right to Education (RTE) Act, the school education department on Wednesday conducted the third round of admissions at schools with vacant seats.

Under the RTE provision, 25% of the seats in private schools should be reserved for children belonging to economically weaker sections of society.

However, as per available information, just 23.27% of the total 21,105 seats in Indore district have been filled after three rounds of admissions.

Officials in the education department admitted that there were few takers for the 21,105 seats reserved under the programme in 1,390 private schools (1,144 in urban and 246 in rural areas) in the district.

“Except for a few prominent CBSE schools in the district, most of the seats at private and semi-private schools affiliated to the Madhya Pradesh Board of Secondary Schools as well as CBSE still remain vacant,” a department official said.

“Only 1,918 seats were filled in the first and second rounds of the admissions in the district, which was held on February 3 and April 17 this year,” the officer said. “After the third round, the figure rose to 4,912.”

Education department officials, on condition of anonymity, said the poor response to admissions was due to the failure of the district administration and the education department in creating awareness about the RTE Act among parents.

Earlier, district education officer (DEO) Kishore Shinde said parents’ preference for CBSE-affiliated schools in urban areas was the main reason for the poor turnout in the first two rounds of admissions.

“RTE seats in many renowned CBSE schools have already been filled in the first round of admissions and now only lesser-known schools are left. Hopefully, the situation will change in the coming days,” he had said during the second round of admissions.
