A two-year-old girl was raped and left bleeding near an ATM in Kela Devi Mandir area of Indore on early Saturday morning, the police said.
The victim is being treated at a hospital where doctors have described her condition as stable.
If it were not for a guard manning the ATM to spot her at around 2am, the girl would have died of bleeding, the police said.
"The guard noticed blood stains on her clothes and immediately reported the incident to the cops who were patrolling in the area," said additional superintendent of police (east zone 1) Rajesh Sahay.
Sahay said a case of rape and abduction has been registered at the Rajendra Nagar police station against the unidentified accused on the complaint of her parents, who hail from Rajasthan and work as labourers in the city. They live in a slum in Rajendra Nagar.
The parents told the police that they and the girl went to sleep at around 11 pm on Friday night, but when they woke up at around 2pm, the girl had gone missing.
When the couple went out to search for the girl, they were told about the crime by the police party that had taken the girl to the hospital.
The police said they have a fair idea about who might be behind this heinous crime and have raided various locations to nab the culprits.
