The Madhya Pradesh police on Monday swung into action after residents of Raghogarh village launched a WhatsApp campaign to get a Bharatiya Janata Party legislator’s son arrested for allegedly shooting a farmer dead a few days ago.
Feeling the pressure, the police, who had been going slow in the case, claimed on Monday to have launched a manhunt to arrest the accused.
Vikram Singh Rao Puar, son of BJP legislator Tukoji Rao Paur from Dewas, had allegedly shot one Pratap Lodhi, 25, last week.
The farmer died on Sunday after battling for his life for four days at a private hospital.
Local residents feared that Vikram’s politically influential father might pull the strings to save his son. As a counter move, they launched the campaign on WhatsApp.
One of the messages which reads, "Pratap Lodhi ka khuleaam katl, Vikarm Puar ko fansi ho," went viral on WhatsApp.
Sources said the campaign against the Puars was being handled by a close member of the family of the dead farmer.
The war has also been expanded to Facebook by some of Lodhi’s relatives.
They posted photographs of the two children of the dead demanding the arrest of their father's killer.
"We hope that our campaign against the MLA's son will create a dissent against him in the community. We demand that Vikarm Singh Puar should be arrested soon and the case against us should be taken back," said a villager.
Dewas superintendent of police Abhay Singh said, "We have formed three teams to search the main accused - Vikarm Singh Puar. He will be arrested soon. Some mobile numbers are also closely watched and steps are on to identify Vikarm's accomplice."
