Youth Congress activists in Sagar were on Wednesday cane-charged by the police when they were on their way to gherao the collectorate over the issues of farmer suicides and Vyapam scam. Some YC workers were also hurt in the cane-charge.

The Youth Congress had organised an agitation over farmers and Vyapam issues, which started at Pili Kothi ground. Congress MLA Jitu Patwari and state Youth Congress president, Kunal Choudary and other local party leaders participated in the agitation.

The activists who were marching to the collectorate were stopped by heavy barricades and police force, following which, some members tried to jump over the barricade, but were forcefully taken into police custody.

After other agitators pelted stones at the police, the police lobbed tear gas and used water cannons to disburse the crowd and later resorted to heavy cane-charge, resulting injuries to about four to six youth Congress activists.

Later, Congress leaders along with Jitu Patwari, met with the Collector and submitted a memorandum, demanding action on the issues they were protesting against.

Jitu Patwari said that even though farmers were facing tough times because of destroyed crops, the Center and state governments were showing no concern.

Some Youth Congress activist were arrested and later released.

The leaders also demanded the ouster of ESSEL power distribution company from Sagar.
