SJVN Ltd (formerly Satluj Jal Vidyut Nigam Limited) was incorporated in 1988 as a joint venture of the Centre and Himachal Pradesh to plan, execute, operate and maintain hydro-electric power projects. Its chairman and managing director RP Singh spoke to Hindustan Times on a range of issues. Excerpts:
How was the financial performance of SJVN during 2011-2012?
In 2011-12, SJVN registered an increase of 17% in its net profit at Rs 1,068.68 crore against Rs 912.13 crore the previous year. This is the highest ever net profit earned by SJVN so far. The total revenue generated from its operations also increased more than 5% to Rs 1927.50 crore during 2011-12.
How much dividend SJVN proposes to pay to its shareholders?
The earnings per share increased from R2.21 to R2.58 in 2011-12. The board of directors have recommended a dividend payout of R0.94 per share, which is however subject to approval of shareholders in the annual general meeting. Total dividend payout comes to about R451 crore, which is again the highest ever.
What are the targets for the year 2012-13?
SJVN plans energy generation of 7,000 million units with an expected revenue realisation of R1,557 crore in 2012-13 from its 1,500MW Nathpa Jhakri Hydro Power Station.
When is the Rampur hydroelectric project likely to be commissioned?
The Rampur hydroelectric project (RHEP) in Himachal Pradesh was planned as second stage development of India’s largest 1,500 MW Nathpa Jhakri Hydro Electric Project (NJHEP). The scheme envisaged that the tail water of NJHEP shall be fed into RHEP and, hence, would not involve construction of any dam and de-silting arrangements. Both these projects will thus operate in tandem. The 412 MW Rampur HEP is heading for completion by September, 2013.
What are SJVN’s plans to enter wind energy generation.
SJVN is now also venturing into the wind energy field with an initial capacity addition of 50MW to promote and develop renewable sources of energy in the country. In pursuit of the mission, SJVN has already started surveying various potential locations in India where the wind energy can be exploited economically.
How did the 1500MW Nathpa Jhakri Power Station perform during 2011-12?
The station generated 7,610 million units of electricity during the financial year against 7,140 million units generated in the last financial year, registering an increase of 470 MU. The Plant Availability Factor (PAF) during the year also increased to 104.26% against 98% during the previous financial year. The plant was awarded “Gold Shield” by the ministry of power, for its ‘Meritorious Performance’ in 2010-11. The prestigious award conferred by the minister of power, Shri Sushil Kumar Shinde, to CMD, SJVN, on March 22, 2012. The Ministry of Power had instituted this Comprehensive Award Scheme for recognising meritorious performance in power sector in the year 2004-05. The Nathpa Jhakri Hydro Power Station (6 x250 MW) of SJVN Limited was selected for this “Gold Shield” under the scheme.
