Established as a Government of India enterprise in 1960, the National Building Construction Corporation (NBCC) today has metamorphosed into a 'Mini Ratna Category I PSE' and is rated "excellent" over the past many years for its consistently upward performance. Its new chairman cum managing director, Anoop Kumar Mittal, who took over charge in April 2013, spoke to HT on a range of issues. Excerpts:
How do you plan to ensure growth for NBCC given the current slowdown in the economy?
The reform measures taken by the government has strengthened the confidence amongst investors at the national and international level. Since everything is inter-related, we do see a positive reflection of the same in construction and infrastructure industry. As far as the planning is concerned, there has been no outlined strategy as such, in the NBCC. We have always strived and will always strive to commit ourselves to our customers delight. The recent project wherein the Ministry of Urban Development, has entrusted us with massive works like re-development of East Kidwai Nagar in a land area of 86 acres, attests the credibility of NBCC.
Would you elaborate on NBCC's present focus areas and diversification plans?
There is no immediate plan to diversify our business line. Of course, there is a reason to it. Amongst all other business segments that NBCC is in like, Project Management Consultancy (PMC), EPC contracts for infrastructure for power sector and real estate segment, PMC contributes to 80 % of our business turnover. However, of late, we have been successful in acquiring land on a pan-India basis for developing real estate. Thus, we now plan to focus on realty sector and increase its contribution to our profit. To name a few, we have our projects going in Gurgaon Sectors 89 and 37-D. The other upcoming projects are in Kolkata, Alwar , Lucknow, Kochi, Patna, Meerut, Faridabad and in Ghaziabad.
What are the immediate changes that you plan to bring in at NBCC?
First of all, my top priority is to make growth-oriented policies for further improving the financial health of organisation. As I have already pointed out, I would hammer on the expansion of real estate segment at NBCC and ensure 100% quality norms in all on-going projects and works in order to keep customer satisfied and delighted. This would not only need adapting to latest, modern, cost-effective technology but also a smooth and efficient coordination and decision making process in place.
Can you elaborate a bit about NBCC's corporate social responsibility activities?
We have been doing various CSR activities to impart education, training and social awareness especially with regard to the rural populace, the disadvantaged, backward class, minority communities etc. Amongst many others, the CSR wing of NBCC is having training operations spread across ten states in India with more than 45 training centres. Around 400 youths will be trained under this training initiative. An MoU has been signed with different organisations to disburse scholarship to girl children and students in Bihar and Mizoram. This is a merit-cum-means scholarship scheme wherein girl students would be given preference. We have also been actively involved in providing toilets in schools particularly in villages. Also doing repair works for depleted schools, construction of bus stands.
