Kings XI Punjab have kept their play-off chances alive by defeating Kolkata Knight Riders in a crucial IPL 2017 match in Mohali. This has ensured that the status-quo when it comes to the teams qualifying for the play-off remains.

Following Sunrisers Hyderabad’s win over Mumbai Indians in Uppal, Delhi Daredevils are now mathematically out of the race for the play-offs. This leaves five teams to contest the remaining three spots in the points-table, with Mumbai Indians already securing the play-off spot. Here is what each team needs to do in order to qualify for the play-offs.

1) Mumbai Indians

P - 12, W - 9, L - 3, Points: 18

Games remaining: vs Kings XI Punjab (May 11), vs Kolkata Knight Riders (May 13)

What they must do: Mumbai Indians are assured of a place in the play-offs. However, in order to finish in the top two, they must win one out of their remaining games. If they lose both, they will at worse slip to third spot.

2) Kolkata Knight Riders

P - 13, W - 8, L - 5, Points: 16

Games remaining: vs Mumbai Indians (May 13)

What they must do: Kolkata Knight Riders failed to seal a spot in the play-offs after their loss to Sunrisers Hyderabad. A win in their last game against Mumbai Indians will seal their spot in the play-offs. However, if they lose their last league game, they must hope that Kings XI Punjab lose one of their remaining games. They must also hope that Rising Pune Supergiant also don’t win their remaining games.

3) Rising Pune Supergiant

P - 12, W - 8, L -4, Points: 16

Games remaining: vs Delhi Daredevils (May 12), vs Kings XI Punjab (May 14)

What they must do: Rising Pune Supergiant must win one of their games to seal qualification. If they lose both games, they must hope that Kings XI Punjab lose to Mumbai Indians and that Sunrisers Hyderabad lose their last game against Gujarat Lions in order to seal qualification.

4) Sunrisers Hyderabad

P - 13, W - 7, L - 5, N/R - 1, Points: 15

Games remaining: vs Gujarat Lions (May 13)

What they must do: This is a vital game for the defending champions. If they win, they are through. A loss puts their play-off hopes in jeopardy. In the event of a loss, they must hope Kings XI Punjab lose one out of their remaining two games.

5) Kings XI Punjab

P - 12, W - 6, L - 6, Points: 12

Games remaining: vs Mumbai Indians (May 11), vs Rising Pune Supergiant (May 13)

What they must do: Kings XI Punjab have kept their play-off hopes alive with victory over Kolkata Knight Riders. If they win against Mumbai Indians and Rising Pune Supergiant, Sunrisers Hyderabad lose their games against Delhi Daredevils and Gujarat Lions respectively, then Kings XI Punjab’s last league game against Rising Pune Supergiant becomes a shoot-out for the fourth spot.
