Jasprit Bumrah was one of the star players of Mumbai Indians’ six-wicket win over Kolkata Knight Riders in the Qualifier 2 match of the 2017 Indian Premier League season.
Kolkata Knight Riders managed a lowly 107 all out as Mumbai Indians’ bowlers took apart their batting order in 18.5 overs on Friday.
A collapse of three wickets for just 25 in the first six overs was one of the downfalls for Kolkata Knight Riders, but a highlight for Bumrah who scalped two.
Overall, Bumrah managed three wickets for just seven runs in three overs. The other star bowler was leg spinner Karn Sharma who was named the Man-of-the-Match for his four wickets for 16 runs.
Speaking with teammate Mitchell Johnson in a video uploaded to the IPL website, Bumrah said he was proud of his performance in the match and that he would get to play in a final alongside the Australian great and other stalwarts in the team.
The two also recounted the first training session they partook in together during the 2013 season, when Bumrah made his IPL debut.
Coming into the Mumbai Indians side from directly from his under-19 days, Bumrah had felt the need to prove himself and targeted Johnson to make his point. It resulted in the big Australian, facing Bumrah’s bowling in the nets, being hit on the helmet by a fast ball.
Here is the transcript of the exchange:
Johnson: Another great performance tonight mate, how’d you feel?
Bumrah: It’s always good you know. This is the third time that Mumbai Indians is playing the final. To contribute in this manner was just a great feeling.
Johnson: I thought you bowled really well tonight. I really love seeing you bowl. In 2013 I was here in the final with Mumbai Indians. Now we have another opportunity and this time we could play together. How do you feel?
Bumrah: It’s a great feeling. That year, I was just a youngster coming out of U-19 cricket. To play with you guys it’s always special. I’ve learnt a lot and hopefully now whatever I’ve learnt I will probably be able to use it in the final as well.
Johnson: There’s something out there which the fans won’t know, but when we first played together at Mumbai in 2013 you bounced me in the nets and hit me on the helmet. Can you talk us through that?
Bumrah: Usually when you are coming out of U-19 cricket so you think you have pace. So you try to experiment on bowlers, because if you hit the batsmen they don’t like it. So I thought I’ll try something on the bowlers and so it was a good day, wasn’t it?”
Johnson: It was a very good ball and I was very impressed with you at that age and I think you’ve come a long way. I have been very impressed with how you have performed throughout this season and I’m looking forward to hopefully playing a final with you. You’ve done so well this year, one more game to go hopefully it’s a win.
