Jasprit Bumrah was perhaps unaware of his captain Rohit Sharma’s birthday when he was handed over the ball to bowl in the Super Over Saturday night against Gujarat Lions. But the pacer ensured he had the best birthday gift for his skipper, giving nothing away to help Mumbai Indians snatch the match away from jaws of defeat in Rajkot. (Match highlights)
Rohit Sharma, too, thanked his stars for the nail-biting finish to end in their favour as Gujarat Lions managed to score just six runs while chasing 12 in the super over. “Very good birthday present, great game of cricket. Never been part of Super Over, that’s something we have learnt as well,” Sharma said in the post-match presentation ceremony.
Sharma, vividly happy with his side avoiding a second consecutive defeat, also cut a cake in the dressing room after the match to continue the celebrations.
Mumbai Indians uploaded a picture of the captain on their official Facebook page as well, with cake smeared all over his face.
Having scored 153 batting first, Gujarat Lions weren’t in the game for most of the match after Mumbai Indians started well with Parthiv Patel and Jos Buttler to reach 109/4 at the end of the 14th over. Although they still needed 45 runs in those six overs, but with six wickets in hand, it should have been a comfortable chase.
However, some exceptional bowling by Basil Thampi, and a disciplined effort in the field led Mumbai requiring 11 runs in the last over with a run off the last ball. Irfan Pathan, bowling the last over, bowled a yorker on Malinga’s pads and as although he ran for a single; Kruna Pandya failed to make his ground leading to the super over.
It started well for Mumbai with Kierron Pollard hitting a six and a boundary and although they had scored 11 off the first three balls, James Faulkner struck back with two consecutive wickets to restrict them to that score.
Only heard stories about that. Didn't see. Have seen this...will cherish this for a long long time. Top skills. https://t.co/dvqmokQeo6— Aakash Chopra (@cricketaakash) April 29, 2017
It wasn’t a huge total going by T20 standards and a boundary would have perhaps eased the pressure on Gujarat Lions, but despite a no-ball and a wide, Bumrah kept it extremely tight in the end, helping his side win by six runs to consolidate their position on the top-half of the table.
