In celebration of its 10th anniversary, Mumbai Indians will honour top players of its past and present squad Sachin Tendulkar, Harbhajan Singh and Lasith Malinga by felicitating them at a private function.
The celebration called ‘10 glorious years of Mumbai Indians’ will have a function hosted at the residence of team owners Mukesh and Nita Ambani on April 10.
The trio of famed cricketers were all part of the original squad that began playing for the Mumbai Indians team in their introductory 2008 Indian Premier League campaign. Indian cricket legend Tendulkar retired from the game in 2013 but stayed on as mentor post retirement.
Several former players and support staff are also expected to be present at the event, including Anil Kumble, Shaun Pollock, Ricky Ponting and Sanath Jayasuriya.
Officials from the BCCI and MCA are also expected to attend the event as are several Bollywood celebrities who have been invited.
Two-time champions Mumbai Indians begin their 2017 IPL campaign with an away game against Rising Pune Supergiant on April 6. Following that, they play their first home game of the season in Mumbai’s Wankhede Stadium against Kolkata Knight Riders on April 9. The celebratory function is being organised one day after their first home game.
It was learnt recently that Malinga and compatriot Asela Gunaratne would miss Mumbai Indians’ opener in Pune because of national team duty. Sri Lanka plays the second of its two-match T20I series against Bangladesh on April 6, the same day Mumbai Indians face Rising Pune Supergiant.
However, they will have the services of Rohit Sharma and Hardik Pandya, both of whom have made successful returns from injury in recent weeks.
Rohit Sharma had suffered a thigh injury that required surgery and a five-month lay-off while Pandya is back to full fitness after a shoulder injury.
Rohit Sharma was seen partaking in training sessions at Wankhede Stadium on Saturday.
