A total of 1.15 crore voters are eligible to participate in phase-II of Rajasthan’s panchayati elections on Thursday to choose 347 zila parishads and 2,163 panchayat samiti members.
Satya Prakash Baswal, chief election officer of the State Election Commission (SEC), said all preparations have been completed for polling to be held from 8am to 5pm.
Four members — three of the BJP and one from the Congress — have already been elected unopposed to zila parishad seats, while 919 candidates are in the fray for the remaining 343 seats.
Similarly, 35 panchayat samiti members have been elected unopposed, and 5,688 candidates are in the fray for 21,28 seats, said Baswal.
To ensure peaceful polling, adequate security arrangements have been made across the districts, and 12,915 polling booths have been set up for 1.15 crore voters, said Baswal. The SEC has appointed 33 observers for effective vigil, he said.
The SEC has authorised district collectors to decide suitable dates for re- polling for gram panchayats. In case repoll has to be conducted for zila parishads or panchayat samiti members, it will be held on February 4, said a SEC official.
Tuesday was the last date for filing nominations for phase-III of the polls.
On January 23, nominations will be filed from 8am to 11am for panch and sarpanch elections, and scrutinised the same day from 11.30am to 3pm.
Polling will be conducted on January 24 from 8am to 5pm and the results announced the same day. On January 25, elections for deputy sarpanch will be held.
A total of 33 zila pramukhs and as many deputy zila pramukhs, 295 pradhans and as many deputy pradhans, 1,013 zila parishad members, 6,258 panchayat samiti members, 9,872 sarpanchs and as many deputy sarpanchs and 10,94,69 panchs will be elected during the panchayat election.
There are more than 3.28 crore registered voters for the three phases, including 1.55 crore women, 1.73 crore men and 40 trans-gender voters.
