Five people were arrested for arranging the marriage of a 10-year-old girl and a 35-year-old man in Chittorgarh’s Gangrar village, police said on Tuesday.
Parents of the minor, elder brother of the groom, their driver and another man have been arrested under the Child Marriage Act and under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code for kidnapping the child to compel her into marriage and trying to dispose her as a slave on Monday.
Groom Madhuram, a farmer from Indora village, however, managed to escape before the police reached the spot, said Gangrar station house officer Labhuram.
“The marriage was held secretively at 1 am on March 21. By the time we received the tip-off, the wedding rites were over. We arrested five people including the girl’s parents,” he said, adding that the child was presented before a Child Welfare Committee that took her into custody.
