Around 18 policemen were injured in a mob violence which erupted after a man was mowed down by a truck on Neemuch Road (NH79) near Rani Keda village under Nimbahera police station in Chittorgarh district on Sunday, police said.
The incident occured when local residents staged a protest demonstration at the accident site.
Police said that one Mangi Lal Khateek, a resident of Rani Kheda area, was killed in a road accident when he was returning home. As the news spread, angry locals damaged a speed breaker and blocked the highway for around two hours.
Senior police officials including Nimbahera Sadar chief Vardi Chand Gurjar, Kotwali police station chief Boraj Singh Bhati, additional superintendent of police Chittorgarh Narayan Singh and other officers reached the spot to bring the situation under control.
While they were talking to villagers, some of miscreants started pelting stones in which Bhati, Singh, two deputy SPs and 14 constables were injured. All the injured policement were rushed to Nimbahera hospital. The mob also damaged two police vehicles.
After receiving the information, a police team led by SP Prasanna Kumar reached the spot and resorted to baton-charg in which around 12 people sustained injuries.
However, the Police manged to sent the body of the deceased to Nimbahera hospital for post-mortem after removing the blockade from the accident site.
SP Prasanna Kumar said 20 people had been arrested and a case was filed against them at Nimbahera Sadar police station.
