Two dozen students were injured, three of them seriously, when a school bus carrying them bumped into a parked truck at Balicha bypass in Udaipur on Monday.
The bus driver fled the scene leaving behind the injured students and vehicle, police said. The injured students were rushed to private hospitals, they added.
According to the police, a bus of Indo American School of Udaipur, carrying more than two dozen students and two school teachers, was on way to the school in the morning when it met with the accident. A few minutes later, the school teachers, who were travelling with the students, informed the school management about the accident and another bus was called to ferry the injured students to two hospitals.
Later, three of them, Rudhrapratap Nagda, 9, his younger brother Veerpratap Nagda, 8, and Mohammed Azhar, who sustained serious injuries, were shifted to another hospital, the police said. Condition of Mohammed Azhar, who suffered head injury in the accident, is critical, the police added.
When parents got information about the accident, many of them rushed to the school to enquire about their wards. But they were allegedly not allowed to enter the school. Angry over this, the parents later staged a protest outside the school. However, they were calmed down by the local MLA, Phul Singh Meena, and senior police officials, who had reached there after getting information about the incident.
Gaurav Nagda, father of the two seriously injured brothers, has lodged an FIR against the bus driver.
The police have impounded the bus and are searching for the driver.
