“My son is innocent. He has been framed and all this is part of a political conspiracy,” Nirmal Kanwar, mother of absconding gangster Anandpal Singh said on Monday.

Anandpal is wanted in several robbery, extortion and murder cases by the Rajasthan police and carries a `5 lakh bounty on his head. He disappeared September last year.

Kanwar said the state police were harassing her family for obtaining information on Anandpal.

“My granddaughter lives in Dubai and every day we hear the police are trying to disturb her to know the location of Anandpal. Many a times, the officials come to our house to enquire about my son even though we have no idea about his location,” she said.

Kanwar was at Vidhyadhar Nagar stadium near Jaipur to participate at a protest rally organised by the Ravana Rajput community – 60 lakh-strong Rajput sub caste spread across Rajasthan – to protest against the police for harassing Anandpal’s family members.

“Anandpal was forced to take up crime as a profession after being framed in a conspiracy…He has done B Ed…(but) when he stood for panchayat elections, he was defeated as part of a conspiracy and thereafter he drifted towards crime. I want a CBI probe into all the cases against him,” said Kanwar.

The 65-year-old woman, however, advised her son to surrender. “I haven’t seen my son for the last three years and have no idea about his whereabouts, but if he comes to me, I would ask him to surrender,” she said.

She refused to accept that his son was behind the death of several policemen. “Is there any proof that Anandpal was present during the incidents? I want to ask the government why they are silent on the issue of firing in Bikaner jail in 2014?...I am pretty sure that my son cannot fire at someone.”

Anandpal and his associate Balbir Banuda were attacked by rival gang members inside the Bikaner jail in 2014. The firing left Banuda dead. In retaliation Anandpal killed the assailants with bricks and sticks.
