Baran town remained closed on Monday to protest the murder of former Shahabad block Congress president Sonu Goyal even as police claimed to have arrested one of the accused.

Thirty-three-year-old Goyal, who was also the husband of a sarpanch, was on his way to Devri town along with his brother Ramavtar on June 25 night when more than half a dozen people attacked him with sticks and iron roads. A severely injured Goyal was rushed to the Shahabad hospital and was referred to the district hospital where he died.

On Sunday, Goyal’s family lodged a case of murder against district BJP president Naresh Sikarvar and his four brothers Brijpal Singh, Virendra Singh, Indrapal Singh, Mahendra Pal Singh and two nephews Gaurav and Raghav Singh.

Kasbathana station house officer Umesh Menariya said Mahendra Pal Singh was arrested and search was on to nab others.

The family members also sat on a dharna outside the postmortem room of the Baran government hospital demanding arrest of the accused and a CBI probe into the murder. They continued their protest when the report was filed.

Local markets of Devri, Shahabad, Kasbathana and nearby areas were closed in protest of the murder on Sunday while Baran town also observed a bandh on Monday.

Congress workers burnt tyres on the roads and roamed in groups in markets to ensure success of the Baran bandh.

Former minister and Congress leader Pramod Jain ‘Bhaya’ and Baran district president Panachand Meghwal accused the state government and local police of protecting the accused.

Another former Congress minister Shanti Dhariwal met the Kota inspector general of police Range and demanded the arrest of the accused.

A state Congress committee led by former speaker Deependra Singh Shekhawat came to the dharna in Baran and will submit a report to state party chief Sachin Pilot.

The committee said the murder following political vendetta was unfortunate and threatened to continue agitation till accused are arrested.
