A Canadian national was found dead in his hotel room in Barmer city on Sunday, police said.

After being alerted by the hotel in the morning, police found the body of Sean Justin Soles, 40, who had checked into the hotel on January 16. The cause of death could not immediately be ascertained.

Hotel employees said Soles was last seen in the hotel’s bar at 11 pm on Saturday, after which he went to his room.

There was no response when a hotel employee knocked on the door of Soles’ room at 10.30 am on Sunday to wake him, said Budharam Bishnoi, the officer incharge of Barmer city police. The hotel then informed the police.

When the door was opened by the hotel’s manager, Soles was found lying dead on the bed.

Barmer police have informed the Canadian High Commission in Delhi about Soles’ death.

An autopsy will be conducted in the presence of a representative from the Canadian mission, said superintendent of police Paris Anil Deshmukh. “It would be only after the postmortem that the reason of his death could be ascertained,” he said. Soles worked for the Canadian company Stinger Wellhead and had arrived Barmer on January 4 to conduct an inspection for Halliburton Offshore Services, an oil company working in Gudamalani area of Barmer.
