The BJP on Friday suspended an MLA from Rajasthan for abusing and threatening to “skin alive” a top health official of the state, triggering an agitation by government doctors demanding the legislator’s arrest.
The party’s action against Kota MLA Prahlad Gunjal came after an audio clip of the legislator abusing the district’s chief medical and health officer (CMHO) RN Yadav went viral on social media and networking sites.
Union minister Venkaiah Naidu announced Gunjal’s suspension in Delhi as the party rushed to douse yet another fire, this time ignited by a regional leader.
A few days ago Prime Minister Narendra Modi was virtually forced to ask party leaders not to cross the ‘lakshman rekha’ after Union minister Sadhvi Niranjan Jyoti and MP Sakshi Maharaj left the government red-faced with controversial statements.
After the MLA’s threat – over the issue of transfer of a male nurse – the CMHO resigned on Thursday claiming pressure on him.
Yadav also said the nurse is facing a departmental inquiry in embezzlement of 2,000 antibiotic tablets.
In the audio clip, the MLA is heard saying in Hindi, “I will skin you alive. You won’t sleep at night. I will put such fear in you…”
Gunjal, however, described his choice of words as an “emotional outburst” and added his intention was “not to hurt anyone’s sentiments”.
