Claiming that the former BJP government had withdrawn the rights of Panchayati Raj institutions in the state, Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot has said empowering such bodies would be a top priority of his administration.

As rural development and improving the lot of the poor would be the focus of his administration, the state government would consider all demands and suggestions for empowerment of Panchayati Raj Institutions and augmentation of the rights and facilities of representatives of such bodies, Gehlot said while addressing the state level conference of PR representatives held at Tonk on Tuesday.

The chief minister said his government was committed to providing a responsive, transparent and accountable administration that would take all decisions keeping in mind the interests of the poor and backward people in society, a statement released here today said.

Referring to the steps taken by his government in his earlier tenure for strengthening Panchayati Raj institutions in the state, the Chief minister said that his government had decentralised the administration and provided 15-16 subject rights to these bodies, but the last government had withdrawn these rights slowly and gradually.
