Five foreigners held along Indo-Pak border

Five foreign nationals –including a woman from Iceland – were arrested on Saturday night from a restricted area in Barmer district close to

international border with Pakistan.
Six Indians were also arrested along with them. The 11 persons were picked up from four different villages by security personnel for allegedly traveling in a

restricted zone without valid documents.
Foreign nationals are not allowed in the entire stretch of land west of National Highway 15 towards the Indo-Pak border without prior permission.
The ban is in force for security reasons under the Foreigners (Protected Areas) Order of 1958.
Police identified the arrested foreigners as Meri Percy from Iceland, Jerjeri Somiwali (Australia), Andrew Watson (US), Peter Wohlan (UK) and Salco Aleceni,

merely stated to be “from a European country”.
The Indian nationals were identified as Sharatchandra (Bangalore), Premal Mehta and Arvind Desai (both from (Ahmedabad), Dilawar and Jiwaram (both from

Barmer) and another unidentified person.
Barmer superintendent of police Hemant Sharma said the arrested persons have claimed to have entered the restricted area “by mistake”.
As per norms, all the arrested persons will be questioned by a joint interrogation committee.They were brought to Barmer where they will be questioned by the

JIC on Monday.
