Five members from a family from Gujarat died when a car they were travelling in hit a road divider in Rajsamand district on early Monday, police said.
A 4-year-old girl sustained injuries in the accident that took place at 5:30 am near Dhanim village. She is being treated in a hospital in Udaipur.
“Preliminary investigation suggests that the car was speeding when it hit a divider,” said Girdhari Lal, station house officer of Charbhuja police station, Rajsamand.
“It is a possibility that the driver of the car fell asleep,” he said.
The vehicle was badly damaged due to the impact of the accident, he said, adding that all the deceased were residents of Baroda in Gujarat.
“A patrolling van found the mangled car. We immediately rushed to the spot with more force. Bodies of the passengers were stuck inside the car and we had to use gas cutters to bring them out of the vehicle,” said Lal.
Police said four people died on the spot while another woman died on the way to hospital.
The deceased were as Amritlal Modi (69), Suman Modi (63), Alkesh Modi (37), Pinal Modi (32) and Vedansh Modi (4).
Relatives of the family were informed and post-mortem will be conducted once they arrive from Gujarat, said police.
