Tragedy struck Jaipur early on Tuesday morning when five members from two families were killed as a heavily loaded truck overturned and collapsed on the car in which they were travelling.

For over the next three hours the car remained buried underneath the vehicle with even the rescuing authorities having no idea on the human casualties.

According to the police, the truck was loaded with several tones of salt and the sacks scattered all over the place after the accident.

“Preliminary investigation suggests that the incident happened a little after 4:00am on Tuesday near the Chomu House circle. After the police were intimated, a crane was brought in to lift the truck. It was after 6am that we discovered the car buried under the vehicle,” said station house officer Kamal Nayan of the accident police station (south).

After the bodies of the five passengers were taken out from the badly-mangled car, they were identified as from two families living in Malviya Nagar and Surajpol area of the city.

The police said that the car was being driven by Rahul Sharma (22) who was travelling with his fiancé Roshni Sharma (21), her sister Jyoti Sharma (33) and cousins Avantika (18) and Nitesh Sharma (20).

Both Rahul and Roshni got engaged on February this year and their wedding was supposed to take place on November.

“The driver and helper ran away after the accident and couldn’t be traced. Several teams have been constituted to arrest the men and we are also registering a case against them,” said Nayan.

The police said that prima facie it appears that the owner of the truck lives in Bharatpur district and efforts are also being made to contact him.

It took the police several hours to rescue the bodies from underneath the truck with the help of crane and other equipment.

According to the police, the reason behind the accident appears to be the speeding by the truck driver.
