Four people, including two cleaning staff of the Udaipur municipal corporation, died of suffocation after falling into a septic tank in Heerabagh Colony on Sunday, police said.
The two municipality workers, Narendra Singh Rathore and Gopal Singh were cleaning the septic tank of a house in the locality around 8.45 pm, when they fell into it.
Seeing them fall, house owner’s son, Vipin Chittora and a neighbour, Raja jumped in to save them but lost their lives as well.
Later, Rajkumar, a labourer, and Mohammad Hussain, a fire fighter, reached the house for rescue but fainted due to suffocation.
After locals raised an alarm, police came to the house and called rescuers, who managed to save the lives of the labourer and the fire fighter.
The two were rushed to a hospital, but the four others had died by then.
Udaipur district collector Rohit Gupta and superintendent of police Rajendra Prasad Goyal rushed to the hospital to meet the families of the injured. The DC assured them of compensation from the chief minister’s relief fund.
Ward councillor Nana Lal Baya said unavailability of oxygen cylinders caused the accident.
