In an acknowledgment of its efforts to make the city safer for women, Hindustan Times, Mumbai, was given the Laadli Media Award for Gender Sensitivity, 2011-2012 (Western Region) at an event in Jaipur on Saturday. HT's 'Blow the Whistle' campaign secured the award in the 'Best Campaign-Newspaper' category.
Dr Jitendra Singh, Rajasthan's minister for information and public relations, presented the award. Manish Pachouly, senior assistant editor, Hindustan Times, Mumbai, received the award on behalf of the team.
With an increasing number of women entering the workforce in urban areas, concerns over their safety are more relevant than ever. The campaign by HT focused on raising awareness about lack of safety in public places and posed hard-hitting questions to various authorities.
The campaign, executed jointly with non-government organisation (NGO) Akshara, saw both the railway police and BEST management take cognisance of the reports and take measures to make public transport safer.
Six hundred entries were received for the 23 awards presented in 20 categories. The awards were presented to media agencies from across four languages.
