The Jaipur airport has registered 24% rise in passenger traffic in 2016-17 as compared to the previous year.

According to the latest passenger traffic data of the Airports Authority of India (AAI), 4.5 lakh passengers travelled by air from Jaipur in 2016-17, as compared to 3.63 lakh in 2015-16.

The number of flights also went up to 3,744 from 2,923 in the previous year, thus registering an increase of 28%.

With introduction of new flights during summer, Jaipur will soon be connected to Surat by air. Spice Jet is launching Jaipur-Surat flight from June 1. The flight will leave at 6.55 am and reach Surat at 8.45 am. During the return journey, the flight will leave from Surat at 8.10 pm and reach Jaipur at 9.50 pm.

The Jaipur airport has opened two additional boarding gates on the first floor of Terminal 2. “This is expected to reduce congestion during peak hours,” said JS Balhara, the airport director. There is also a plan to have an extra exit gate on the ground floor of Terminal 2.

At present, Jaipur airport operates 48 flights, including six international flights, daily. In order to deal with the rush of passengers, the Jaipur airport is planning to have separate terminals for arrivals and departures of domestic and international flights by 2019.

The operations at Jaipur airport terminal building will soon be handed over to a private player. Seven firms have bid for running the terminal building and other operations at the airport, and the bids will be opened by May end.
