The Pink City too may get a swanky Metro railway with the Rajasthan government on Monday giving its nod to the preparation of a project report for the purpose.
"The report is to be completed within nine months and construction work on metro project in Jaipur would commence in two years," GS Sandhu, Principal Secretary, Urban Development and Housing, said.
The report would be an elaborate study of feasibility and operation of Metro rail in Jaipur, project cost and financial resources among other factors.
"A sum of Rs 2.5 crore would be spent on the project report, financially supported equally by the Urban Development Ministry, Government of India and Jaipur Development Authority," Sandhu said.
The metro rail project of the Pink City would be based on Delhi Metro.
According to Sandhu, around 25-30 km of a densely populated area is likely to be covered in the first phase which is expected to be completed in four to five years.
Sandhu said he had met E Sreedharan, MD of Delhi Metro Rail Corporation, on February 17 and 18 on the project and he had suggested starting the work on project soon.
A fast developing city, Jaipur has a population of around 32 lakh which is expected to rise to 40 lakh in 2011 and about 70-80 lakh in the next 25 years.
So the state government has taken the step to ease public conveyance in future, the official said.
