At least a dozen NGOs led by Narmada Bachao Andolan activist Medha Patkar have decided to organise a three-day protest in New Delhi against the government's move to amend the Land Acquisition, Resettlement and Rehabilitation Acts.
The Land Acquistion (amendment) Bill, 2007 and the Resettlement and Rehabilitation Bill, 2007 moved in Parliament during the budget session were against farmers, Patkar alleged at a press conference in Jaipur on Tuesday.
Leaders of NGOs including the National Forum of Forest People and Forest Workers, Nadi Ghati Morcha, SEZ Virodhi Sangarsh Samiti, National Alliance of People's Movements would stage a sit-in from April 28 demanding repeal of both bills moved for amendment in Parliament.
She claimed the Bills empower collectors to buy land within 48 hours for multi-national companies, but does not give priority to resettlement and rehabilitation of people or farmers providing land.
A memorandum to this effect was given to Congress President and UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhi, but it was pending before a committee, she said.
