Kirori Meena, known as much for his histrionics as his fickleness, faces a tough political challenge this time. He spoke to Urvashi Dev Rawal.
You were MP from Dausa before you contested the 2013 assembly polls. Are people happy with your work?
Yes. I was MP from Dausa last time. I belong to the district and people know me. I have risen from this district. I was zila pramukh, then MLA, minister and MP. I have been with the people through thick and thin and attended to all their problems. I have got roads, health centres and schools for people in villages and towns. Electrification of towns and villages has also been done by me.
How you view your opponents?
There are 26% Meena votes in Dausa parliamentary constituency. I had got 36% votes last time. So other castes had voted for me. This time too, other castes will vote for me.
Namo Narain Meena and Harish Meena have not served the people. The public dislikes them. Namo Narain was MP from Tonk but his party denied him the ticket this time. He did no development work in Tonk.
Harish Meena was the DGP but the law and order situation during his tenure was very bad.
At the national level your party is part of the NDA but here you are fighting on your own?
Yes, we are in alliance with the NDA at national level. Our central leadership wanted to contest four seats in Rajasthan and the BJP had agreed. But here Vasundhara Raje refused to give us seats. So we decided to go it alone.
You contested the MP elections in 2009 then the MLA elections in 2013 and now you are again contesting the MP polls again. Why?
It is the people who wanted me to contest. They forced me. They said the MP election is important and you should contest.
The Congress says you cheated them as you had promised not to contest the MP polls and to support them. Your comment?
It is the Congress, which cheated me. They had promised my brother a ticket from Dausa. He even got VRS and left his government job. But at the last moment they ditched him and gave the ticket to Namo Narain Meena.
