The Sikar police arrested on Wednesday a 38-year-old Bikaner resident for the alleged rape of a 5-year-old girl on September 11, a case that sparked major uproar.

Pawan Kumar Bishnoi, a resident of Nokha in Bikaner, was arrested after locals tipped the police off about his sudden absence from his workplace, a hotel that was close to the spot where the child was found in a critical state after the assault, inspector general of Jaipur Range DC Jain said.

A police team picked Bishnoi up from his Nokha residence on Wednesday morning and brought him to Sikar. He was working at the hotel for the past three months.

He has confessed to his crime, the police said, adding that two suspects detained earlier have been released.

According to the police, Pawan said that he consumed liquor on the day of the crime and found the girl sleeping on a road divider. He took her to a lane near a petrol pump and raped her around 1 am. After the incident, they slept there until early morning when he took her to where he had picked her from and left at 5.51 am. It was here that a CCTV camera installed at a local’s house caught his activity.
