A 50-year-old farmer has been sitting on a 200 feet power tower from last 24 hours in Sikar district demanding Rs. 20 lakh compensation from the National Power Grid Corporation (NPGC) for putting up a transmission tower in his fields two years back.
Sikar district collector LN Soni said the family had sought Rs. 2,40,000 compensation from the NPGC two years back, the power corporation paid them just Rs. 80,000. On Monday, when the corporation employees had gone to the power grid for some maintenance work, Gopal Choudhary climbed the tower erected in his farmland in Dinapur village, 10 kms from Sikar district, the collector told HT.
“We are asking him to negotiate it with the grid corporation and not hold the district administration to ransom, but he has not heeded to our requests,” the collector added.
Local administration and police officers who are camping at the tower said the farmer was aware that the power supply through the tower had been switched off when corporation staff had come for maintenance.
The incident has not hit power supply in the district since the grid is part of a transmission network.
