Nihalchand: Once youngest MP, now a minister

jaipur Updated: May 27, 2014 15:48 IST

Ganganagar’s Member of Parliament Nihalchand, the lone MP from Rajasthan to get a berth in Narendra Modi’s council of ministers, got politics in legacy.

At a young age, he learned the tricks of the trade from his father — Begaram Chauhan, an MLA from Raisinghnagar assembly seat.

Nihalchand made his debut in active politics in 1995 after being elected as pradhan of Raisinghnagar panchayat samiti. He was just 24 then. In 1996, he tried his luck in 11th Lok Sabha on BJP ticket from Ganganagar seat and won the polls, thereby becoming youngest MP. He was just 25 then—the minimum age to contest LS polls. Ironically, Meghwal, a Scheduled Caste, is a fourth term MP which makes him the senior most among the Rajasthan MPs though he is only 43 years old.

In 12th Lok Sabha, he was defeated by Congress Shankar Pannu. Nihal, a fighter, avenged the defeat by winning 13th general elections. Nihalchand was elected MP for second time.

In the 14th parliamentary elections too he defeated his nearest rival Congress’ Bharatram Meghwal and earned glory of becoming MP for the third time.

However, in the 15th Lok Sabha once gain he saw the defeat when Bharatram Meghwal defeated him.

In the recently concluded 16th Lok Sabha elections, BJP candidate Nihal Chand defeated Congress pick Master Bhanwarlal Meghwal by 2,91,741 votes.

Once BJP expelled Nihalchand Elevated

Nihalchand was once declared ‘rebel’ and expelled by BJP. Reason: In the assembly election of 1998, BJP declared Nihalchand as party candidate from Raisinghnagar.

He was given party symbol and also election symbol ‘lotus.’ But in a dramatic turn of events BJP join hands with Hariyana Rastriya Lokdal (HRLD) and gave that seat to HRLD.

Thereafter, party asked Nihalchand to withdraw from elections which he did not agree. Cracking the whip, BJP expelled him terming as rebel.
