Commissioner of the state election commission (SEC) Ram Lubhaya on Wednesday said the election schedule of panchayati raj institutions (PRIs) can be announced anytime after December 20.
He said voting in 16 districts would be held through electronic voting machines (EVMs), while in remaining districts would get ballot boxes.
Lubhaya said this while chairing a coordination meeting at the SEC office over various preparations associated with PRI elections.
He also met senior officers of personnel, home, finance, police, general administration and motor garage departments and asked them to work with dedication, so that the PRI elections are conducted peacefully and fairly.
Discussions were held in the meeting on the availability of police force, additional requirement of home guards and forest guards, availability of the budget etc. The meeting also focussed on filling necessary vacant posts of officers concerned with election work, appointment of observers, providing vehicles to observers by motor garage. Lubhaya asked officials to follow the important orders and directions related to law and order issued by the state election commission.
Special director general of police Navdeep Singh said sufficient police force would be deployed to conduct PRI peacefully.
SEC chief election officer and secretary Satyaprakash Baswala informed that the commission has completed all the necessary preparations for the PRI polls. All district election officers have been given the necessary directions and guidance regarding the polls, added Baswala. He said since the elections are held in remote and rural areas, weaker sections of the society, especially women, will be provided extra protection, so that they can cast their vote without any pressure and influence.
