“My son showed me the bruises and scars after I returned home from Delhi on Monday…He told me that he was hit with a stick repeatedly just for playfully jostling his friends and shouting,” said Sanjay.

The station house officer of Sadar police, Chandra Prakash Chaudhary, said the boy was sent for medical examination. Some bruises and scars were found on the boy’s thigh, he said.

According to the police, Verma has accepted that he caned the boy to discipline him. He claimed that he initially scolded Ankur and later lost cool and beat up the boy.

Child Welfare Committee (CWC) chairman Vijendra Parmar took a serious note of the incident.

“Eliminating corporal punishment in schools is very necessary...Police have taken legal action against principal, but the CWC will also supervise the matter and see that the accused is punished,” he said.

Guidelines issued by the National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) on eliminating corporal punishment in schools, elaborating the RTE’s classification, defines corporal punishment not only as physical punishment but also mental harassment and discrimination.
