Rajasthan: business community protests SP’s transfer

The business community in Jaisalmer on Sunday protested the transfer of superintendent of police Pankaj Choudhary, who had been shifted allegedly on the insistence of a Congress MLA for reopening a case against the legislator’s father.

The Rajasthan government issued a clarification saying the transfer order was ‘routine’.

Choudhary, along with 48 IPS officers, had been transferred on Friday. Various trade and social organisations in Jaisalmer and leaders of the BJP are linking his transfer with the opening of a history sheet (criminal records) against Gazi Fakir, father of Congress MLA Saleh Mohammad.

“I opened the history sheet as a routine process. There have been reports of across-border connections of Fakir and his family,” said Choudhary, who declined to comment on his transfer.

Markets shut down as hoteliers and tour operators held a rally as a token of protest and submitted a memorandum to the collector on the issue.

Choudhary has been transferred to Kishangarh in Ajmer as police training services commandant.

Fakir, 78, is booked in six cases including cross-border smuggling and land grabbing. One history sheet goes back to July 1965.
