A man allegedly strangled his 21-year-old daughter in Sri Ganganagar district early Wednesday as she loved a youth from another caste.
Surprisingly, after the crime, Narayan Jat called up the Raisinghnagar police station and confessed to murdering his daughter, following which he was arrested, police said.
Sri Ganganagar superintendent of police Rahul Katakey said the girl’s lover, Navdeep Singh, had approached him a few days back, apprehending danger to his and the girl’s life.
“We had bound down the father and brother of the girl… The boy had also moved an application in the Raisinghnagar SDM’s court, requesting recovery of the girl, who, he alleged, had been held hostage by her father,” the SP said.
According to information from the SDM office, the girl was to record her statement in the SDM court on Wednesday. Navdeep had, on January 7, moved an application in the SDM’s court saying that he was in love with Rajni, a resident of Lakha, a village near the Indo-Pak border, and wanted to marry her. He had also informed the administration about Rajni’s father having locked her up in a room for a month. The SDM had called the girl for her statement on the application on Wednesday.
The girl had earlier told the police that her life was in danger because her father and brother were against her relationship with Navdeep, who is not a Jat.
Raisinghnagar SHO Arvind Bishnoi said they arrested Narayan on Wednesday based on an FIR lodged by his brother, Hansraj. In the complaint, Hansraj said he had told Narayan several times to let Rajni marry Navdeep since they were both adults, but Narayan thought it would diminish his honour in society.
