A 16-year-old girl was poisoned after she became pregnant from a gang rape, resulting in her death at a Bharatpur hospital late on Wednesday night. The father of one of the rapists has been accused of the crime.
The girl’s father said she complained of abdominal pain on Wednesday evening, following which he took her to the community health centre in Jurahara. The doctors there referred her to the Raj Bahadur Memorial Hospital in Bharatpur.
The body was handed over to the family after an autopsy was conducted on Thursday.
The girl reportedly told her father about the rape while he was taking her to the hospital. “She said four men from her village gang-raped her about two months ago, when she went to a nearby forest to collect fodder for their cattle,” the father said, adding that the accused threatened to kill her if she mentioned the incident to anybody.
Police have registered a case against the four alleged rapists and a search has been launched. In the FIR, the girl’s parents have named the father of one of the suspects as the murderer.
Dr Archana Mittal, one of the doctors who conducted the autopsy, confirmed that the pregnant girl was poisoned to death. The post-mortem report is likely to come out on Friday.
In a similar incident, a 14-year-old girl was reportedly gang-raped and set ablaze by three people in Sriganganagar district two months ago.
According to the National Crime Records Bureau, at least three cases of child rape are reported in Rajasthan every day.
