The health department has seized tobacco products worth Rs 39 crore with old 40% pictorial warnings.

According to the health department, the raid was conducted on Monday evening and continued till the wee hours on Tuesday. An official informed that godowns of two leading tobacco companies were raided and stocks worth Rs 39 crore were seized. The raids continued on Tuesday on wholesalers and retailers at Ramganj Chaupar and Badi Chaupar.

Despite the court order for implementing 85% pictorial warning on both sides of tobacco product packages with effect from April 1, products with 40% pictorial warning are still being sold freely in Rajasthan.

Tambaku Mukt Rajasthan Abhiyan, Jaipur convener Rajan Choudhary said the state tobacco control cell has seized tobacco products worth crores of rupees, which is praiseworthy. The Abhiyan demands that there are stocks worth Rs 10,000 crore lying in the market with 40% pictorial warning, which should be seized immediately.

Rajasthan Cancer Foundation president Dr Rakesh Gupta suggested that instead of sending mails to districts, a video conferencing should be called to direct officials for action.
