Robbers hauled away an Automated Teller Machine loaded with Rs 31.8 lakh from the State Bank of Bikaner and Jaipur branch in a Rajasthan town, the police said on Tuesday.
The robbery was committed at Badu in Nagaur district, just 60 km from the state capital.
This was the 17th ATM robbery in the state in the recent past, said Nagaur superintendent of police Raghvendra Suhasa. The robbers had covered the camera at the branch before escaping with the ATM in a vehicle.
Suhasa suspected more than four robbers were involved as the ATM weighed 100 kg and could hardly be lifted by one or two persons.
A forensic team collected fingerprints to ascertain whether it was the handiwork of a known gang or a new one, the police said.
The robbery came to light when the bank manager found the ATM machine missing as he was about to open the branch on Tuesday morning. He registered an FIR at the Gacchipura police station. Suhasa said, “We have searched the nearby areas but no clue has been found as yet. Teams have been dispatched to different places. We will soon arrest the culprits.”
Sources claimed that there was no guard at the branch when the robbers struck the ATM booth.
