Police said five to seven unidentified persons of the Kachcha-Baniyan gang — so called because they carry out robberies wearing kaccha (brief) and baniyan (vest) — attacked the Gurudev Sadhna Dham along Kota-Keshoraipatan Road in the wee hours. An alleged gang member, Pappu Madari, was later arrested.

Ashram coordinator Uma Devi, who was injured in the incident, told the police that armed with wooden sticks and stones, the gang members entered the place after breaking the gate. They beat her up as well as the devotees and caretakers.

The gang then took away jewellery worth `2 lakh and another `2 lakh in cash that was kept in the donation boxes and fled.

Kota city superintendent of police Satyaveer Singh said Bunty, 30, and his sister Naina Devi, 25, who were living in ashram, were killed by the gang.

The injured were admitted to Government Maharao Bhim Singh Hospital.

Singh said the gang was active in neighbouring Madhya Pradesh and had carried out similar crimes in rural areas of Kota around seven years ago. He said 10 police teams had been formed to catch the absconding gang members.
