The Rajasthan government’s home department has sanctioned a total of Rs 21 lakh for the 42 Banjara families whose houses were set afire by a mob near Dhikola village in the district on Tuesday.

The compensation came after the district administration submitted its survey report on the damage caused to Banjara basti due to the arson incident. Acting collector Giri Raj Kumar on late Wednesday night handed over the draft of Rs 50,000 to each affected family.

According to the survey report, 12 pucca houses, 20 keluposh houses and 10 muddy houses were damaged in the incident, besides 10 motorcycles, one tractor trolley and one thresher. The Shahpura tehsildar assessed the total loss at Rs 39.15 lakh.

Meanwhile, the residents of Dhikola, from where 11 people were arrested for their alleged involvement in the case, on Thursday gathered in the village and decided to stage a dharna in Bhilwara against “unlawful arrests”, but police stopped them in time.

A village committee gave a memorandum to sub-divisional magistrate Kalu Ram Khod, urging him not to arrest innocent villagers.

Additional director general (training) Nand Kishore, who is probing the incident, started his investigation against the police personnel posted on the day at Dhikola police post and Shahpura police station for their alleged links with Banjara leaders Karma and Chandu.

Shahpura police allegedly had not filed an FIR given to them by Kailash Jat a day before the arson incident.

Five policemen, including circle inspector Bhupendra Singh and Dhikola chowki in-charge Umaid Singh, were suspended for not taking precautionary measures before the incident.

Gopal Kesawat, Rajasthan Rajya Vimukt Ghumantu Kalyan Board chairman, on Thursday reached Dhikola and met with the collector and the SP and reiterated his demand for immediate arrest of the accused whose names were given in an FIR filed by Mohan Banjara on August 19.
