A Nasrala resident was convicted for raping a girl of the same village and sentenced to 10-year imprisonment by the court of additional sessions judge JS Bhinder. Three co-accused were acquitted as the evidence on record could not prove the charges against them.

The 18-year-old girl had complained that on the evening of March 3, 2011, when she was returning home from the factory, she was waylaid by Paramjit Singh and his accomplices in a Tata Sumo and taken to a secluded place where Paramjit raped her.

The police had suspected the case to be one of consensual sex, but when the complainant approached the Punjab and Haryana high court, an inquiry was conducted by a DSP-level officer and a case under Section 376 of the IPC was registered against Paramjit and three others.

As the prosecution failed to prove the charges against the rest, the court convicted Paramjit.
