Whereas former jails minister Sarwan Singh Phillaur had to quit after his son’s name figured in the drug racket, Gurmesh Gaba, a SAD leader from Goraya and an accused in the same case, continues to enjoy the privileges of senior vicepresident of nagar panchayat, Goraya, in Jalandhar.
Gurmesh is the son of Chunni Lal Gaba, leading industrialist from Goraya, whose name has figured in the drug racket.
Drug lord Jagdish Bhola had informed the Enforcement Directorate (ED) that Gabas had introduced Delhi-based smuggler Varinder Raja to Phillaur’s son Damanvir Singh.
Despite this, Gurmesh still enjoys the privileges given to him by the Goraya nagar panchayat where he was the senior vice-president till five months ago.
For a senior vice-president in a nagar panchayat there is no provision for a separate office, but Gurmesh, because of his proximity to local SAD leaders, including Sarwan Singh Phillaur and Phillaur MLA Avinash Chander, managed to get a room for his office.
Even after his name has emerged as a prime accused, Gurmesh, who has also been provided a peon, continues to meet visitors in his office.
Nagar panchayat executive officer Gurpal Singh failed to give a satisfactory reply as to why Gurmesh was given these privileges.
“It’s a fact that his tenure as senior vice-president has ended. But he is still a councillor,” he said. The Gabas were not available for comment.
