The 'Chintan-Shivir' of the SAD (Badal) at a destination like Goa was not only against the panthic ideology, but also amounted to rubbing salt on the wounds of financially-wrecked state, senior Congress leader Sukhpal Singh Khaira said on Sunday.

"The state is facing a debt of over Rs 80,000 crore. It has failed to pay salaries to its employees for March and its inability to honour social welfare schemes , like the old-age and Shagun are well-known," Khaira alleged.

Due to the poor financial situation, the government had recently burdened poor girl students from class 9-12 with hefty fee, he said, adding that charges in government hospitals had also been increased.

The government has failed to implement its manifesto promises of giving Rs 1,000 as unemployment allowance to lakhs of unemployed youth, while students of secondary classes were still awaiting the promised laptops.

"The alliance government had nothing to offer in the budget, other than fudging figures to present a rosy picture," he alleged.

The claims of good governance too have fallen flat with officials preferring to busy themselves, first in Delhi Sikh Gurudwara Management Committee elections, then the unwarranted Moga by-election and now a luxury tour to Goa, he alleged.

"There is total chaos in Punjab on the law and order front. Policemen in uniform are being killed daily by Akali goons and there is simply no stopping the spate of rapes in the state. The junior Badal (Sukhbir) has miserably failed both as home minister as well as sports minister," Khaira alleged.

All traditional Akali leaders like Kuldeep Singh Wadala, Ranjit Singh Brahmpura, Sukhdev Singh Dhindsa had been pushed to the brink, while non-panthic faces like Hans Raj Hans, NK Sharma, Deep Malhotra, Joginderpal Jain were now the Panthic mascots, he added.

“None in the Akali hierarchy had the time to pay respects to a senior leader like Capt Kanwaljeet Singh on his fourth death anniversary,” he added.
