Bank employees' nationwide strike for wage revision and against banking reforms stalled the sector's operations here on Wednesday.
Nearly 2,500 bank employees and officers in Jalandhar and another nearly 4,000 in the district participated in the agitation, forcining the closure of 260 and 670 bank branches, resepectively, for the day. Nearly 18,000 cheques for total transactions worth `200 crore could not be cleared.
Cash transactions of `200 crores were also affected. "Business worth `800 crores suffered in the district on account of the strike," said United Forum of Bank Unions convener Amrit Lal. "The last bipartite settlement on the revision of wages and service conditions, covering the period from November 1, 2007, to October 31, 2012, has expired and the revision of pay and service conditions is due again from November 2012m," he added.
The officers and employees threatened to intensify the agitation and take more strike actions, if their demands were not met.
