The Enforcement Directorate on Friday recorded the statement of Amarjeet Kaur, wife of retired IAS officer Swaran Singh who is facing charges of alleged embezzlement in a function to mark the birth centenary of Shaheed Bhagat Singh in 2008.
Kaur was summoned under ED Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA). Kaur along with his husband remained at the ED office for more than three hours and submitted her statement.Swaran Singh said he was accompanying his wife to the ED office.
ED officials said they had taken cognizance of the case suo moto and had recorded Singh's statement earlier.
A case was registered at the vigilance police station in Jalandhar under sections 420 (cheating and dishonestly inducing delivery of property), 467 (forgery of valuable security), 468 (forgery for purpose of cheating) 471 (using as genuine a forged document) and 120 B (criminal conspiracy) of IPC and sections 13 (1) d 13 (2) of Prevention of Corruption Act against Swaran Singh, Vikas Mehra, Sanjay Gera and Satbir Singh on March 26, 2011.
The matter of embezzlement of funds had come to light after a local NGO, HELP, had procured information related to expenditure incurred on the celebrations through the RTI Act.
The HELP had approached the vigilance bureau seeking for an inquiry into the matter. The vigilance inquiry reportedly took 14 months.
