Taking a lead in the state, the municipal corporation (MC) has launched a web portal to allow easy access to records of registered births and deaths. Records of the past nearly 12 years have been uploaded.

Municipal commissioner Manpreet Singh Chhatwal, mayor Sunil Jyoti and deputy mayor Arvinder Kaur Oberoi on Wednesday formally launched this service for the public.

“While all other civic bodies have also computerised their records, we are the first in the state to provide this information to public online,” claimed the mayor.

“This is the first stage of our project to computerise the birth and death registration procedures. Earlier, we had provided data from 2007 to 2011 for verification at the Suwidha Centre for public convenience. Now, people can verify their records from 2000 to 2012 while sitting at home round-the-clock,” he added.

“By the end of the year, we will upload the full record of this year, and from January 1 onwards, we will provide an option for downloading and printing provisional certificates at home,” he claimed.

The MC is also planning to introduce online institutional registration by empanelling nearly 425 hospitals and nursing homes, and by issuing unique user ID and password for uploading the registration data.

“We are computerising public services to bring transparency in our functioning. Once the work of uploading birth and death certificates is completed, we will computerise the records of the building department. Survey teams are collecting data for assessing property tax, and we aim to provide the details online for public information,” the mayor added.

Local registrar Virender Kalia said, “This facility would certainly benefit people, who have to spend hours in the MC office searching for their registration numbers. Now they can do it from their computers at home and contact the office with registration number already on their applications.”

How it works

A separate link for 'Birth and Death Department' has been provided on the MC website, in the section labelled 'Civil Registration System'. The link opens a separate page with options for verification of birth and death certificates and registration of hospitals, besides a 'frequently asked questions' section. All necessary application forms have been uploaded on the server, and can be downloaded by the visitors. One can verify birth and death records by filling the mandatory fields date of event and father's name. Visitors can also use the mother's name and place of birth fields to filter the search.
