A power-theft notice is coming to jolt the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

The partner in the state's ruling alliance on Saturday used a "kundi" (illegal) connection to steal electricity for its function to lay the foundation stone of its district office. State party president Kamal Sharma and other senior leaders were present.

The transmission wires were connected to the nearby transformer for direct power supply to the marquee. When pointed out that it was illegal, Kamal Sharma said it was unfortunate. "I will ask the local organisers to explain," he said.

Punjab State Power Corporation Limited (PSPCL) superintending engineer Gopal Sharma, to whom the matter was reported, said the corporation would issue a theft notice to BJP district president Subhash Sood before taking punitive action against him. "Provide us with evidence; I assure you stern action will be taken," he said.

Asked to react, Subhash Sood said he was unaware of the violation. "Where was the need for illegal power connection," he said, "when a generator was there."

Later, state party president Kamal Sharma said the BJP has taken serious note of the advance tax and delay in the payment of VAT refund to traders, and after the assembly session, would take up the issues with chief minister Parkash Singh Badal.

Chawla misunderstood Harsimrat: Sharma

On party national vice-president Laxmi Kanta Chawla's condemning the ally, Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) parliamentarian Harsimrat Kaur Badal, for derogatory comments against the Gandhi family, Sharma said he would speak with her but perhaps she had misunderstood Harsimrat, who had referred to the Gandhis'alleged support to terrorism in Punjab.

Harsimrat had said assassinated leaders Indira Gandhi and Rajiv Gandhi had paid the price for their deeds.
Sampla flays state party chief

Highly placed sources in the BJP said party vice-president Vijay Sampla had criticised state party president Kamal Sharma in a party meeting in Chandigarh on Friday and accused him of not taking office-bearers into confidence the Lok Sabha seat-sharing agreement with the SAD.
