The state chapter of the Bahujan Samaj Party has flayed the decision of state government to close 690 government schools in the state to merge these in other schools situated nearby. In a press release issued Saturday, BSP general secretary Sukhwinder Kotli termed this an anti-poor and anti-Dalit step.

"The decision of the SAD/BJP government is highly unfortunate and the government has worked against the interests of the thousands of dalit and poor students studying in these schools. In these schools students of mostly dalit and economically backward people take admission for study and the proximity is the main factor behind their act," said Kotli.

"The government has taken the decision arbitrarily without taking into consideration the factor that the parents might not be able to send students. Education of hundreds of such students had been put at risk. We demand immediate roll-back of this decision and the government should not close the schools hastily, Kotli said, adding that, "If the government fails, people of state will be on roads to claim their rights."
